I cannot get my wordart to print

Although I can bring up the shapes in word art and type into the box, I just
get a square with adjustment handles on and no wordart. The same thing
happens when I try to insert clip art or a photo; I get a square with the
handles.

Go to Tools > Options > View (or in Word 2007, go to Office button >
Word Options > Advanced > Show document content) and uncheck the
"picture placeholders" option.
