I have XP SP2 with automatic updates running. When I click to install the
updates, aftert a few minutes of obviously trying to install the updates, I
simply get the message tjhat they have not been installed!! Nothing more.

If you reboot and try, does it work then?

No....I've tried that. I have tried several times over the last few days.
Very strange.

Same failure here.

I got it to work by going to Control Panel->Admin Tools->Services and
setting Office Source Engine from Disabled to Manual and then starting
the service. Re-attempt of update then worked.

I am having the same problem, here are the error messages:
"Error 25090 Office setup encountered a problem with the Office Source
Engine, system error 2147023938. Please open C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office11\1033\SETUP.CHM and look for "Office Source Engine" for
information on how to resolve the problem." When I go to SETUP.CHM I get this
message:

" Product Key
Type the 25-character Product Key number. It is located on your Certificate
of Authenticity or the sticker on the back of the CD case.

Note If you are converting a trial version of Office, you must use the
Product Key from a full version of Office. Your full version Product Key can
be found either on the package you purchased at a store or in the
confirmation email you received after making your purchase of Office online.

The key has already been installed and the product is activated. I get the
same error message if I use the detect and repair function.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Gary....You obviously are very knowledgable and confident and willing to
try things. Is this 100% safe for me to try as I know very little about
computers and anything like this fills me with enormous fear. Do I have to
reset it back to Disabled if/when the Update is successful?

Hi Emg108,

Generally, there's nothing in Microsoft Office that will set the Office Source Engine Service (OSE) to disabled, but without it
being enabled Officeupdates won't install from the Microsoft Update website.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/903774/

If you find that the service is listed as disabled, are you running any 3rd party 'power tools' or 'setting tweaker' optimizer 3rd
party software?

Hi Bob...I've checked and all it says is "manual".
Goodness.....what do you mean by " 3rd party 'power tools' or 'setting
tweaker' optimizer 3rd party software?". Elisabeth

Had the same problem:
This fixed the problem in my case

Method 1: Determine the status of the Office Source Engine service
To determine the status of the Office Source Engine service, follow
these steps:1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then
click OK.
2. In the list of services, double-click Office Source Engine.
3. View the Startup type list.
4. If the startup type is set to Disabled, change the startup type to
Manual. To do this, click Manual in the Startup type list, and then
click OK.
5. Try to install the Office update again.

After a lot of searching and troubleshooting I found a solution that worked
really fine for me!

After having read and tried several manoeuvers (like som really nice ones
found at
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/troubleshoot.aspx?ln=en ) I
finally ended up in my Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs list. There I
observed I had previously installed another anti-spam update for Outlook
called Security Update for Outlook 2003 (KB892843). I was hit by a thought
that that one might be an obstacle for the new one, so I simply uninstalled
it, clicked that annoying little Install Update icon with the exclamatio mark
on a yellow shield AND IT JUST NICELY INSTALLED THE NEW UPDATE AND
DISAPPEARED! I haven't seen it since (and that was about half an hour ago)!

I hope this tip will help someone else too!

P.S Since I had fooled around with my install/uninstall log files for Office
2003 a while ago, which made everything stop and scream something like:
'something I need on drive D:\ is missing since drive D:\ can't be found' as
soon as I tried to either Repair or Uninstall the whole Office 2003 package,
but after I executed my Acronis Disk Director Suite and simply renamed one of
my other partitions to drive D:\ everything ran astonishingly smoothly
without protests. So first I did Repair of the whole Package and then I
removed the older Outlook Anti-spam Update before I installed the new one
(KB911961). I don't think that had moe to do with my success in the tip
above, but for having a functioning installation of Office 2003 in all
aspects. D.S

Cheers!

I have tried this and it still won't install it. In fact, none of the
suggestions work for me unfortunately.
