I cannot open a blank document in word 2000, only opens previously

Hello, I am using Office 2000. I don't know what I did but now when I open
the word program a previously save document opens. If I go to file, new and
blank document the same saved opens. I even deleted that save document but it
won't go away. What did I do to cause this and what can I do to repair it?
I would appreciate any help.
