I cannot open a powerpoint file from 2003, it can be a 95 version

I have a powerpoint file that I need to open, it's likely that it's created
in version 95 or earlier! It has an error message saying: You are attempting
to open a file type that is blocked by your registry policy setting.

Thanks, Steve. I think you are right. I have tried to search for 97 viewer
as advised by MS online help but it does not exist at all. Will check if I
can find another PC with the earlier version.

I have two pc's. An old one withe an older version of windows xp and office xp, including power point.I also have a newer pc with a newer version of widows xp but the same office xp.The new pc has no problem opening .pptx files. The old pc will not open the files. Error message reads 'cannot open this type of file.

PowerPoint prior to Office 2007 can't open PPTX files UNLESS you've installed the compatibility pack, which
allows opening PPTX/PPSX etc. files in PowerPoint 2000 and up.

Sounds like you may have that on the one PC but not the other.

It's available here (watch out for the linebreak)

Or the file might be opening in the free PowerPoint viewer if you've got a newer version of that installed.
That would allow you to view but not edit the presentation.

By the way, if it's a .PPTX file, it can't be a 95 version.

PPTX files are from PowerPoint 2007 and later.
