I cannot view my contacts by catagory why?

I am trying to view my contact list by catagory. I have established the
catagory I wanted and then went through and put each contact into that
catagoty but when I go to view them I get the message cannot view by
catagories.

Are you trying to sort by category or using a group by category view?
