I can't access a particular Excel file

I am using Excel 2000. When I try to open the file, Error message says it
maybe a read-only file or trying to reach a read-only location (which both
are not true). Or the server the document is stored on may not be responding.
The file is just on my desktop. I am guessing this inaccessible file is
causing my scan disk failure too. Scan disk restarts repeatedly without
finishing.

Please help!
