I can't compact or repair an Access database

When I try to compact and repair an Access 2003 database the process appears
to start then I get an error message. All it says is 'Access has encountered
a problem and needs to close.' The 'repair/compact' database button is
checked and the process is started again. How can I compact this file?

Oliver covered the basics. In the event that those steps are
insufficient. then see the following.

For more information on corruption including possible causes,
determining the offending PC, retrieving your data, links, official MS
KB articles and a list of vendors who state they can fix corruption
