I can't get mail merge to sort

I'm following the steps to sort a mail merge alphabetically but the sort
never happens. The screen changes as if the sort is happening but the data
field (last name) never changes order.

Without knowing the version of Word and type of data source involved it's not
possible to give an accurate answer to this question.
