I can't group emails by sender even if they come from the same address

In one of my Local email folders in Outlook 2003 (SP2) I am trying to
arrange messages by sender. I have one, and only one, contact named
"John Smith" and I want to group all messages from him together.
However I have several messages that display as "John Smith" in the
'From' field, and several more that display as "Dr. John Smith" in
the
'From' field. All of these messages are from the same email address,
but do not sort into the same group. I have tried to change the
display name from "Dr. John Smith" to "John Smith" by opening the
email, double-clicking on the name listed there, erasing the "Dr."
portion, and saving and closing the email, but the change is not
saved. Any thoughts as how to resolve this?
