First, you provide some actual information. For example, why would you ever
import an Outlook data file? That is an excellent way to lose data. It is
never the way to transfer data.
Second, how was the data file created? Did you create it in a newer version
of Outlook that is no longer compatible with older versions?
I bet you did.

Ok.. I'm importing data (contacts to be specific) from my office machine to
my home pc. I thought pst files are the best way to do this.

Next, let's say the office machine has/is a newer version of outlook than my
home pc.... how do I import pst files created on a newer version into outlook
2002?
thanks

As I said, you would never import the data. PST files are Outlook data
files. You open them in Outlook to access them.

The newer versions of Outlook provide you the opportunity to create an
Outlook data file that is compatible with older versions:
File > New > Outlook Data File > Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders File...

Just as you do not import an Outlook data file, you must not use Export to
create the file. The Export Wizard does not provide the alternative to
select your PST file format.

Hi Russ -

don't mean to be thick, so let's take it from the top given the background
provided.

what is the best way to "transport data" from one pc to another (that aren't
on a network), including contacts, calendar and task items recongizing that
the office machine has a newer version of outlook as compared to the home pc?
Thanks

1. Create a PST file in the correct format in the Outlook installation from
which you want to transfer data. Make sure you keep track of the name and
location of this file.
2. Copy the data you want to transfer into that PST file. Close Outlook
completely.
3. Copy that PST file onto the hard drive of the Outlook installation to
which you want to transfer the data. Remove any read only attribute it may
have acquired from storage medium.
4. Open the PST file in Outlook. Copy the data you want from it. Then close
it.
