I can't move my curser around my word documents

Since Microsoft updated my computer this morning and restarted it
automatically I have been unable to move my curser around any of my word
documents. The docs are fine and work on another computer and my mouse and
curser work fine on all other programs. When I close word down a message
comes up to say word has stoped responding. The pointer allowes me to click
on any other part of word to open any of the tabs but wont let me work on the
documents. It is as if each document was a PDF file not a word document. I
have uninstalled the updates but no change and I have uninstalled Office 7
twice and reinstalled it but no change. I am not convinced that Office is
being completely uninstalled because my individually configured toolbars are
still there and I would have thought they would be removed as well and I
would have to reconfigure them.
I am at my wits end and could use some help.

That's a symptom of a Word Data Key corruption - usually because Word has
been running when updates are installed.

Run Regedit and expand by double-clicking to the key below. With DATA
selected, press DELETE. Word will automatically recreate a new key when it
is restarted.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

Symptoms of Data Key corruption include:

• The mouse does not work when you use Word.
• You cannot open a Word document from the Search window in Windows
Vista.
• You cannot open a Word document from Windows Desktop Search.
• Word crashes when you try to start or exit Word.
• Word crashes when you open the Open dialog box.
• Word crashes when you save a document.
• Word crashes when you close a document.

If you feel uncomfortable editing the registry yourself, Microsoft have a
fix that will do this for you.

I'm experiencing the same problem in Word and Outlook. I cannot select or
highlight any text using the mouse cursor. I tried deleting the Word\Data reg
key and restarting Word but this did not fix the problem. I don't know what
else to try.

Terry, I have the Word problem where when I try to open a file I get an
error message from Word saying it couldn't find the file, but it does open
up Word to a blank page. Now if I try double clicking to open the file
again, it opens fine. With this I thought I'd try your suggestion of the
Fixit app.

I tried downloading and installing the Fixit (50204) pkg but it failed and I
don't know why. I'm running Vista Home Premium SP2, all WU's are current,
2 GB RAM. I tried it both with my AV and firewall enabled and then with them
both disabled. Neither works. Is this fix just for WinXP?

Second question: Will running the regedit program as you say cause any
problems. I really hate to futz with the registry especially since I don't
have the original disk for my Office 2007 since it was purchased online and
downloaded to install it.

Thanks...........Paul C

Terry,
As I said in my original post, I'm really nervous about mucking around in
the Registry, but I will if you think deleting
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data" is the correct
fix for the problem I described about how Word won't open files, or if you
think deleting this key won't screw something else up. I've been trained by
all you experts to fear working in the registry.

If you give me the ok, I'll delete the key.............Paul C.

Thanks Suzanne. One last question: I have Office 2007. I assume when I
delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data", that
the 12.0 is the reference to Office 2007. Is that correct? I know that 8.0
refers to Office 97 and that 9.0 is for 2000, so I assume 12.0 is for Office
2007...... but maybe not. In my regedit I have 10.0, 11.0 and 12.0 but am
assuming that 12.0 is the one to delete.

Please confirm if you know..........Paul C.

Yes, 12.0 refers to Office 2007.

There will be no 13.0; Office 2010 is 14.0

I just wanted to pass along something that may be useful to anyone running
the CA (California Associates) Security suite supplied by Brighthouse
Networks. For other reasons, I decided to finally uninstall my CA Security
Suite after using if for years since I now use Avira, MBAM, SAS and CCleaner
to keep my machine clean.

Once I removed CA Security Suite, my Word issue of files not opening up on
the first double click went away completely. I never had to make that
registry fix of deleting
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data".

My machine (including restarts, shutdowns, opening new web pages, even
opening other Office files) is quite a bit faster now. I had no idea that
CA was causing so many problems.

Hope this is helpful.............Paul C.
