I can't open an Excel file sent via a PC

Babackd

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel I use entourage for my mail and I received an excel file that ends in xls. I saved it to my desktop and when I try to open it, I get this message;

Cannot be accessed

The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding.

What's going on? How can I fix this?

Step 1: NEVER use the desktop. Save files somewhere both functional
and reliable-- that's why Leopard finally implemented something most of
us have been doing for 15 years: creating a folder [username]/Downloads
and putting all incoming files there.

Step 2: Do Get Info on the icon on your desktop. Does the info window
say it's an Excel file? Does it show the file size as something
greater than zero?

Step 3: try saving the file again (assuming you didn't do something
really stupid like deleting the incoming email message).

Step 4: try opening the file in OpenOffice

Step 5: contact the sender and ask for verification of the file type and
the version of Office under which it was created.
