I can't open some Excel 97 files in Excel 2000

When I try and open some Excel 97 files in Excel 2000
Excel crashes and I get the error message "EXCEL.exe has
generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will
need to restart the program.", how do I fix the problem ?

While this shouldn't happen, it can. If there's anything wrong with Excel 2000
(its files or Regitry settings), that could be the problem. If there's something
wrong in the files, it may be harder to fix.

The standard approach is to assume the former, and reinstall Office or Excel and
apply all the service packs. Then try loading the files. If it still doesn't
work, the problem is in the files.

You may want to assume the latter - the problem is in the files - but you'd need
another spreadsheet program in which to open the files. Do you still have Excel
97? If so, open them and check the exact file format. If they're in the 95/97
XLS format, save as copies in *97* XLS format. If they're in 97 XLS format, save
as copies in 95/97 XLS format. Try loading the copies in Excel 2K.

If they still won't load in Excel 2K, describe what's in them, especially
whether there are any links to other workbooks or references to any add-ins.
