I can't re-activate a user in Manage Users in PWA

I am having the most hair-pulling thing happening in PWA..first off my
configuration is PWA with Sharepoint 3.0...I de-activated a user and when I
try to edit the user to re-activate them I get an "Unknown
Error...troubleshoot using Sharepoint administrative services. I'm lost on
this one.
