I can't save my Word Document

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

When I attempt to save a word document, I get the error message, "The disk is full trying to write to Macintosh HD", followed by unhelpful recommendations to free up space on a drive that has almost 52 GB of free space.
Nor can I save the document to a flash drive with almost 17 MB available.

All this for a file of approximately 5 MB.

Bizarrely, I can download a 12MB mpeg file off the internet and save it to my hard disk.

Is there a particular reason why Word is doing this?

I am sure there is a particular reason, but it's difficult to point exactly
at it.

Mac OS X will not allow Word to 'write' to the disk.

That is normally a disk permissions error.

But it can also be a corrupt file.

Try a re-boot of the computer. That often fixes it.

Try running Disk Utility and repairing permissions (then re-boot again).
That may fix it.

If not, try disconnecting your network cable: this may be a network
conflict.

Make sure you apply Service Release 1 from Microsoft:
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 Update
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx>

Hope this helps

I had the same problem. I saw in another forum (one for G4 clamshell
macbooks that the fault lies in a faulty Microsoft Equation in the document.

I went through my document, deleted an equation, trying to save, undoing the
erased equation, deleting the next equation and trying to save again. Sure
enough, after deleting one of the equations, I was able to save.

Why hasn't this been fixed since the G4 / Office 2004 (or before)?

It has. That's one of the the reasons they changed to the Office 2008 file
formats.

In the old .doc format, it is not possible to solve the problem. In the new
..dotx format, it should not occur.

However, old documents will have to be fixed the way you did, one-by-one :)

Cheers
