f I double click I get a blank box, and can't see existing text. If I type
anything it appears on top of the existing text. I only want to change a
couple of words plus there are headings that are a different colour so I
can't change that either

One scenario where this might happen is if the shape text you want to edit
is inside a group. Then double-click might edit the group text instead of
the sub-shape text. You can try first clicking on your text to see if you
can select just the shape that contains it. Then use F2 to enter text edit
mode. Alternatively, you can select the group shape and go to Edit > Open
Group to work with the text shapes inside the group.

Thanks for the advice

However I still can't edit the text. I am using Visio 2002. I don't have
the option to Edit > Open group. I selected all and then ungroup but got an
error message saying " Shape Protection and/or layer properties prevent
complete execution of this command" but when I go to layer and protection
properties it says there are none do I want to add some. All are unticked so
there should be none. I also tried F2 to edit and that gives me the edit box
but I cannot see the existing text and if I type anything it appears on top
of the text I am trying to edit. It is as if it is on a layer but I have
Background to the page and it is not on there and the page itself. Any other
ideas would be most appreciated.
