I can't type in footnotes pane

When I try to type in the footnotes pane in Normal View (Word 2003) I get a
briefly flickering hourglass but I can't type anything in. I can however do
so in Print View. This happens in all my documents, so it can't be a case of
a corrupted document. I have also got Word to recreate normal.com with no
improvement, and of course I did detect & repair. Any suggestions?

This is just me guessing, but I'm wondering if this could be a problem with
the display driver?

If it is, what can I do about it?

You can update the driver. You may also want to see Windows Help for
assistance with trouble-shooting.

Updating the driver was the first thing I did after reading your last post,
but no dice. Windows Help for trouble-shooting Word or device driver--which
did you have in mind? I'm beginning to think about reinstalling Word--is this
different from detect and repair? Would it just install on top of my existing
installation?

I was referring to the Video Display Troubleshooter (at least that what it's
called in Windows XP Help). But I haven't actually tested it, so I don't
know how helpful it is. Also, remember that I wasn't sure that this is a
display issue.

Note that reinstalling Word usually does not fix problems, but what happens
if you create another user in Windows? Will the footnote pane behave for
that user?

I don't think this is a display problem either. It's exactly the same for
other users. This is really baffling.

Unless someone else posts a solution here, you may want to repost the
question in a new thread (maybe at the beginning of next week).
