John Jaworski

I have just done a clean install of XP Pro. I installed
Word 2000, Word crashed on startup, I updtaed it with all
of the patches available..strill crashed I started it
with the winword.exe /a command and it started with no
problem. I went to
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.h
tm and found that I probably have a corrupted template. I
did the search for *.dot and went through all the
files...NO normal.dot. How do I create a normal.dot
file???

Thanks!

Word will create a Normal.dot file as soon as you save any customization in
Word. But you may not be able to find it unless you set Windows' Folder
Options to display Hidden and System files.

I found the normal.dot file thanks! I deleted all
instances of it but I still cannot open word. It crashes
on loading. Can you help me??

Since Word starts correctly with the /a switch but still crashes after
Normal.dot has been renamed/deleted, you need to look to the Registry or the
Startup folder for problems. Go back to
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm and continue to
work through the troubleshooting steps.
