I do not have cd for office-how do I install SP3

I have followed the instructions on the microsoft office site but, to no
avail. The update has been successfully downloaded but I cannot install as I
no longer have the original cd

Bad advice. The full-file version reduces the likelihood, but does NOT
completely eliminate the possibility, that the user will need to insert
the Office XP CD at some point during the update process. Several users
in these newsgroups have reported that after they cancelled the
installation of SP3 after they were prompted to insert the CD they
didn't have, they lost the ability to start Excel. And the user won't
be able to run Detect and Repair, or uninstall and reinstall Office XP,
because the user doesn't have the CD.

Hey there,

Quoted from the page
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FD-6F69-4289-8BD1-EB966BCDFB5E&displaylang=en:

Download this file if you do not have access to your installation source or
if you experience problems installing the
officeXpSp3-kb832671-client-enu.exe file.

According to the above passage, the user should be able to install the patch
without the installation source (or Office XP CD). If after running this
patch and it screws up MS Excel, the user should be entitled to a free tech
support (at least MS refunded my tech support fee).

It might look like a bad advice to you, but the likelyhood to resolve the
user's issue is high.

However, everything we suggested in the NG, do it at your own risk. The most
is that we will try to help you on your issue if new problem arises.

And nobody bothered to ask the OP what version of Office is he trying to Update. Both of you are presuming Office 10. He could be trying to install SP3 on Office 2000 which does need the original installation CD.

Just my 2 cents here.

Quoting from the same page:

"Some users will still be prompted for the original CD when using the
Office XP SP3 Full File Version, depending on your installation of
Office XP. For more information, please see the Microsoft Knowledge
Base article..."

Free or not, guess what MS tech support is gonna say if the user is
prompted to insert the CD? They will tell the user to provide the CD,
and that the user can't undo the damage without the CD. But the user
doesn't have the CD, so your advice still sucks. Where is the evidence
to support your opinion that "likelyhood to resolve the user's issue is
high"?

While you may have good intentions, the section on "Helping Others When
You Can't Fix Your Own Problems" at
