Not quite true. You got replicating EMails from malicious people
pretending to be Microsoft, or from computers infected with the virus.
Microsoft DID NOT post this virus, and Microsoft cannot prevent people
from posting rubbish to these newsgroups.

Preventive measure: NEVER, EVER under ANY circumstances believe an
EMail or a Newsgroup post which purports to be a Microsoft patch.
Microsoft *never* distributes patches in this manner; if you get such
an email, *it is a lie* and almost certainly a virus.

Also, get some good virus protection software and keep it up to date;
and use Windows Update to ensure that you have all the current patches
*directly from http://support.microsoft.com and not from anyplace
else*.

Karen,

I'm not an expert, but, depending on the mail program you have (I use
Outlook Express 6), see if you can set your Message Rules, or whatever
selective download capabilities you might have, to delete these messages
direct from the server so they never get into your Inbox.

And if you don't have that option, MailWasher will give it to you.

I've received about 500 since last night.

It's not just this newsgroup and it seems that there is somebody on each of
the others I monitor that believe it is from their group.

It does seem to be related to groups in some way. I've had over 400 hits
from my AT&T account and hardly any from two others, one of which gets most
of the porn.

Correct! I'm regularly visiting other groups too and I'd never suspected
this group.

My count after ~ 40 hrs: 1800.
The spammer seems to be ignoring my sig ;-)
