Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

My issue is when I create a table I can't seem to type a message outside the table on the top of it.

I'm afraid the only possibility I can deduce from your description is that
you're creating the table at the very beginning of the document. In a new
document enter some text first and/or press the RETURN key at least once
before inserting the table.

In an existing document, use Table> Select> Table, cut the table, type your
text content, press RETURN once or twice, then paste the table back in. [It
helps if you have the non-printing characters (¶) displayed.]

If that isn't the problem you'll need to provide a much more complete
description of the circumstances. It's also a good idea to specify your
exact current update levels of both Office & OS X.

To get in "above" a table in a document, click anywhere in the first row of
the table, then choose Table>Split Table...

That places a paragraph above the table, into which you can type.

Just move to the first cell and hit return. If there is data in the first
cell, make sure you are at the very beginning of the cell. From anywhere in
the document: alt+home, then return.

You now have a paragraph above the table.

Good Grief!!

Ummm.... That's a BUG!! :)

It will happen only of the table is the first thing in the document. And it
shouldn't happen, ever :)

That's a bug. I just checked: The Windows version does it too. I shall
write it up!

Cheers
