I have a word document saved to my desktop and wish to copy/past

I can open the desktop icon for my resume and i think i have saved it in word
text format and attempt to copy which i do and then go to a application for
employment which ask me to copy and paste and find i do not have the option
to paste as it is greyed out and does not work. (wordy i know) Please help
me.

Try this:

1. Open the file in Word, select the text you want to copy, then press
Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard.

2. Open the employment application and position the insertion point where
you want to paste the copied text, and press Ctrl+V (paste).

It sounds like you've copied a shortcut to the file or a file to the
clipboard, and what you want is the text itself. The grayed Paste command
indicated either that the clipboard is empty, or that it contains an object
that is not appropriate for pasting in the current context. If you put text
into the clipboard (as indicated above), then Paste should become
available.
