I have Microsoft works suite 2004 lost my product key

I called the support number listed here on another post and the guy told me
Microsoft no longer supports my product. I had a new computer built and they
put my old hard drive in it as a slave drive ?? but I had issues accessing my
programs and had to reinstall this. When I go to open my old docs saved on
that drive it now pulls up word but asks for this key. I have no idea where
it is I have looked everywhere. The guy at Microsoft told me to go out and
purchase a full version as an update won't even work.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Of course you would have had problems accessing your programs if the old
drive was put in as a slave. It would have had to have been the C Boot drive
as it was in the old PC to work. As fitted it is just a collection of files
to give access to your data. You *may* be able to replace the new drive with
the old one as master, temporarily, and if it boots up despite the
differences in hardware stored in the registry, you may be able to use
software tools to extract the key from the registry (though if the Word
version was 2000 in that version of Works, it will be reluctant to give up
the required key - unlike later versions).

If the version of Word was an OEM version supplied with the original PC, it
may not even run on the new PC in any case even with the key.

I am inclined to agree with the person at Microsoft who suggested a new
copy.
