I have no NK2 file...

Hi, my Outlook 2002 auto-completes a vast list of addresses when I begin to
type, which is fine, except an awful lot of them don't exist any more, so I
want to remove them.

I don’t want to get into 3rd-party tools to edit the nk2 file – I just want
to delete it and start again. But I haven’t got one! Yes, I have my machine
set to view all files etc, and have done a search on *.nk2 and there simply
isn’t one.

What do I do please?

You must not have set your machine to show hidden files correctly.

With respect, I have been in IT Support for about 10 years, and have just
about mastered the basics now, so I feel I DO know how to view “hidden files
and foldersâ€, “protected operating system files†etc., and to do a simple
search on *.nk2.

Your reply might have been more helpful and less patronising had you
suggested that there was, perhaps some way in which I could (from within
Outlook) locate the nk2 file on our network, as perhaps it might somehow have
migrated there. My colleagues can’t find their nk2 files either.

Anybody have any helpful suggestions?

There is no way to do so from within Outlook.
The only reported cause for this behavior is the one I've already stated.
I've never seen a report of a missing NK2 file for anyone who has the
feature working correctly and hidden files displayed. Yours is the first.
I'll ask around to see if anyone else can reproduce the problem. More
information would be helpful. Have you ever been able to find your NK2
files? What do you see in the default location?

OK, I've figured out what went wrong. In the KB article, it tells you to
“Click Start, point to Search, and then click All files or folders.â€

If you do that, it doesn’t find it. You have to then click on “More Advanced
Optionsâ€, and tick the box for “Search Hidden Files or Folders†– otherwise
it doesn’t find the *.nk2, even when you have “View Hidden Files†etc enabled
normally.

Five of us searched for this file, and none of us realised you had to do
that – probably because normally, IMHO, you know where to find files, unless
they’re documents or something that the users have scattered all over their
C: drive, so you do a search on *.doc or whatever, and of course you’re never
searching for hidden files.

I think the instructions in the KB could be clearer, but thanks for your help.

Re: "of course you're never searching for hidden files" with my small amount
of experience with Outlook and other MS applications, I would suggest the
opposite - always include hidden files in searches because a lot of the
unusual files (like the .n2k) you seek are hidden.

Open Windows Explorer, enter "%AppData%\Microsoft\Outlook" in the Address
field, click Go, and you'll see it whether or not you have viewing hidden
files and folders enabled.
