i have problems with outdenting tasks and summary bars

Nils214

When I want to remove a task from being outdented I am unable to do so, also
if I outdent a task too far it becomes a summary task and I cannot make the
summary task back into a normal task. Has anybody experienced this and do
they know how to resolve it?

Nils214,
What does, "...remove a task from being outdented..." mean? We will need
a little more explanation before we can help with that one.

Yes a task will turn in to a summary line if it is outdented and there
are tasks under it. This is normal Project behavior. The best way to
turn it into a "normal" task (i.e. non-summary) is to also outdent the
tasks under the new summary.

Oops, please read 'indented' for the first 'outdented' i have written.
If I indent a series of tasks and create a summary bar, but one of the tasks
has been indented incorrectly, if I try to outdent this task it becomes a
summary task itself?

also why is there only one level of undo?? This is so frustrating. when i
want to undo several actions i cannot and I am stuck with abandoning
everything back to my last save. I wish my company would buy powerproject, so
much easier!!

Yes. When setting up a hierarchy in Project care must be used. Sometimes
the user may have to go an extra step to correct an erroneous indent or
outdent.

There have been several comments over the years about the single undo of
Project. I don't recall for sure, but the level of undos "might" be
expanded in Project 12. Nonetheless, what it means for existing versions
is that the user must be careful and perform regular saves and/or
backups - but then that's just smart computing with any application or
OS. Powerpoint is a very slick application but it isn't worth a darn
when it comes to planning and scheduling.

All indications are that Project 2007 WILL have multiple undo. Microsoft has
been publically demonstrating it, so unless something goes terribly wrong it
will be there.

Can you try this? It might help you,

<Microsoft regrets as,
!When you indent a task in a Microsoft Project plan, you may not be
able to outdent the task that has become part of a summary task.
Additionally, if you insert a subproject in a master project, you
cannot delete the inserted project summary task from the master
project.

Solution would be,

Try it

Hi unknown,

I suggest installing Service Pack 2. As JV3421 notes, the problem with
outdenting and deleting inserted projects was fixed in SP-1 for Project 2003.
Service Pack 2 includes the fixes from SP-1 as well as some other fixes.
Please see the following URL for information on Service Pack 2:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887620/en-us

You also note that you cannot make a summary task a "regular" task. What
defines a summary task is its subtasks. Once you apply SP-2, outdent any
subtasks under the summary task and it will not longer be a summary task.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
