I have problems with Outlook shutting down on its own.

Each time I open Outlook and click on the first message/email, the response is,
"Outlook has encountered a problem and must shut down, etc" Any clue as to
what might be causing this problem.
(This started after I had downloaded the version of out look and discovered
that it was compatible with nothing!. I removed/deinstalled the application,
but this problem has continued. Short of re-formatting my HD and
re-installing XP-Pro, is there another solution?)
