I installed AVG virus protection & now I cannot open Office docs?

I installed AVG Virus protection software and now I cannot open any of my
Office Documents? My AVG is fully updated so I am not sure what to do next.

The error message I get is as follows:

"You may be encoutering this message because an anti-virus program is not
allowing the file to open. This can be caused by one of two conditions.
Either the anti-virus program needs to be updated (due to a compability
problem with this application) or there is a virus in the file but the
anti-virus program cannot properly remove or process the virus it has found.
In either case, the file you are attempting to open should be treated as
infected until you have updated your anti-virus software to the latest
updates available from the vendor. All major anti-virus software
manufacturers have created updates to address known compatibility problems
with Office applications. They also usually provide a virus signature file
that is available for download from the Internet and must be updated
regularly to properly scan for all known forms of viruses.
If you are experiencing this problem on a computer where a new version of
anti-virus software was recently installed from a CD-ROM, it is advised to
connect to the Internet and download the latest updates available from the
vendor.
If you are experiencing this problem on a computer where the latest version
of the software is installed, all signature files are up to date, and the
file will not open (but other files do) then it is very likely the file is
infected with a virus and the anti-virus program cannot remove the infection.
There is also the possibility the file is corrupt (damaged) and cannot be
properly handled by either the anti-virus software or the affected Office
application. In this case, it may be necessary to attempt recovery of the
file using the related recovery utilities that may be available with the
application (not all applications have file recovery or repair capabilities).
For more information about this issue, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base
article 835404."

Like I said, I checked the software, it is up to date. It is not
registering a virus and even if I create a new Office Document I cannot
re-open it, so I really don't think its a virus issue. I don't want to
uninstall the virus protection, so, any suggestions?

Thanks

Try disabling the Office Plugin that comes with AVG by clicking
on Start | Run, and in the Open box, type:

regsvr32.exe /u avgoff2k.dll

If this fixes the problem, great. If this doesn't fix the
problem, then you can reenable the AVG Office Plugin by clicking
on Start | Run, and in the Open box, type:

regsvr32.exe avgoff2k.dll

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that and it said "Load library failed -
The specified module could not be found". I also tried the second command to
reenable it and got the same message? Any ideas?

Try specifying the full path to the avgoff2k.dll file (e.g.,
c:\pathname\avgoff2k.dll) in the Run command. You might try
reading the Help instructions that come with AVG or visit AVG's
website http://www.grisoft.com to see if they offer any other
suggestions.

I think that could be the case because when I close Word it asks if I want
to overwrite Normal.dot (it never asked that before). What do I do about
that?

Thanks

Perheps you can "Tools"->"Macros"->"Macros" to see if there's macros
associated with MS Word. You may have to switch the dropdown menu to
Normal.dot to see effective macros on that template.

Actually, if you're worry that there's macro virus, it's better to download
another virus scanner to test it.

P.S.: I'm using AVG at have, and be able to confirm that it won't require
you to change the default template.

Ed;
To see if it's your Normal.dot;
Close Word, locate your Normal.Dot, using Explorer.
Re-Name Normal.dot to something like Normal.OLD.
Open Word, word will create a new Normal.dot.
See if the problem persists, if it does then it's not Normal.dot (you can close Word, kill
the new Normal.dot and re-name the "OLD" back to DOT.
If the problem clears up then something is "schmucked" in Normal.dot.

I changed the normal.dot and I still have the problem. I'm thinking of
returning the software, demanding a refund and buying different software.
Any recommedations for good virus protection software?

Did changing Normal.Dot get rid of the "do you want to save Normal.dot" message?

Also, you mentioned "Office documents" - did you mean just Word (i.e. is Excel ok)?

FWIW I run AVG(free) and haven't had any problems.
