No, there is no hope at all
If you have not closed the document, then Command + z will step you back
through the past 999 versions. But once you close the document, the temp
file that contain the changes are cleaned up and there is no way back after
that.
If you had had "Always make backup copy" turned on, then the previous save
would be in the .bak file. Turn that one on now: it's well worth it in
times like this.
Sadly, you have just learned that you should save the "New" version as a
separate file BEFORE you start making changes.
But if it makes you feel any better, I am still making this mistake, after
30 years. Some of us are very slow learners
Cheers
I had a document open and I was retyping a new version of it. I meant to hit
"SAVE AS" so I could keep the old document as is and then save a new version.
I accidently hit "SAVE" and now the old version is gone! I really really need
to find this document before its last modification. I didn't have the "backup
document" box checked... is there any hope? Does Word have any type of history
feature?
