Well, were these bounces from other users to whom you never sent any
e-mails? If so, a spammer is using your e-mail address, spewing their
crap but without regard to whether or not the username is valid at a
domain, and the domain's mail server spews back a bunch of NDRs
(non-delivery reports) back to the sender. Some mail servers are
misconfigured to accept an e-mail and then later check if it is
deliverable. A good mail server will check DURING the mail session with
the sending mail server if the message can be delivered. If not, it
rejects the message DURING the mail session and it is up to the sending
mail server to handle the NDR it sends to the claimed sender. Users and
mail servers that accept e-mails and then decide to send a bounce only
have the return-path headers in the message that the *sender* put there.
So if the sender lied about who they are, the bounces don't go back to
the sender but to whatever e-mail address they claimed was theirs.
