I keep getting formula too long message when I set up a workbook

I am trying to link 2 workbooks that keep a runnung total of 1 bi-weekly
yearly expense report into a monthly totals workbook for tax purposes. I have
been successful except when I set up the monthly workbook to refer back to
the bi-weekly year long workbook for November I get a message that says
"formula too long" I tried to enter a range of cells instead of individual
cells but I keep getting an error when I do that!!!
HELP!!!

Try using Named Ranges instead of explicit ranges. For example if the range
AZ1234:BB1239 appears in a formula define it as "a". This can greatly
shorten the formula.
