I lose control of my cursor when using excel

when clicking in any worksheet within Excel the cursor changes from arrow to
cross, but I then completely lose control of it - I can't close excel or
click anywhere else on the worksheet. The cursor will not change to an arrow
when i move it away from the work sheet....
HELP
