I need a little bit of creativity

I work for a constuction firm, and my boss reinstalled our old copy of MS
project 2002. I'm learning the ropes of it, and for practice, I even planned
out a road trip I'm taking with my friends!

Anyway, we have a number of expensive power tools, leveling lasers, etc. all
with serial numbers. We also do several jobs at a time, and have a hard time
keeping track of our instruments, so my boss had an idea to use project to
track them. For each task, we would use assign tools from resources to that
task, but my concern is when I open a new project, and assign that tool to
another task going on at the same time, is there a way to get it to recognize
the time conflict?

if you have an alternate idea for this, I'd love to hear it.

Hi,

You will have to create a resource pool and share the resources.
Look for help on resource sharing.

That answered my question very well, and thank you. But do I need Microsoft
Project Server in order to do this? We're running Small Business Server at
the moment, and we can set up Document and Meeting Workspaces, and document
and photo libraries, but that's about all we do with it for now.

Hi,

Who said so? No, not at all. Resource Pools and resource sharing are
available in project Standard and in Project Professional as well.

Hi Tony,

I will jump in here since Jan may be offline for the evening. I believe all
you need to implement a resource pool is a file share on one of your
systems. As I recall, the key is connectivity to the project plan that
implements your resource pool. I have worked with resource pools only
briefly because we have Project Server and don't need them, but I from what
I've read of your situation so far, Project Server is not required. All you
need is connnectivity to your resource pool. Based on your comments, it
sounds like you've got a LAN in your office, so you should have the
infrastructure you need ... unless you are angling to get your boss to buy
you Project Server (grin!).

Keep digging and good luck!

Hi Tony,

I'm no expert on servers and networks, but I believe the situation you
propose will need Project Server. You could try posting on the server
newsgroup. Please see FAQ Item: 24. Project Newsgroups. FAQs, companion
products and other useful Project information can be seen at this web

Hi,

This time I have to be very negative.
Forget it.
No system, not even Project Server, will allow you to have any Project file
open read/write more than once simultaneously.
Of course, I said simultaneously.

Each one in turn, that's no problem. The first one to open has it R/W, the
next ones Read only.

Hope this helps,

That answers it, and the way I wanted. There's no way in heck I'd be able to
explain to my boss how to upload all the documents in order to do what I
proposed. Thanks for all the help Jan!

Thanks crook (I actually had a dream last night about my mom's car getting
broken into by my 12th grade english teacher. I don't think I should eat
burgers at the bowling alley anymore)

I think I might just get him to use some kind of lan system, where we set up
the pools in folders. I'm not sure how I want to organize it right now, but I
got a few ideas. Thank you very much.
