I need an OL-compatible non-IMAP public domain name, if possible

Running OL2007 under Vista Home Premium SP2.

I'm switching my ATT service to Quest, and I'll need a new domain for my
address. I've seen that using msn.com, being an IMAP (sp?) server, requires
the use of Outlook Connector (no problem there), but it also denies the true
recipient name in the Sent Items listing -- a nuisance.

There are a lot of domain names I can choose from, including msn, hotmail,
live, q (for Quest) and others. Can someone suggest one that is not an IMAP
server, thereby avoiding the Sent Items problem? Barring that, would you
care to tell me which is your favorite and why?

What do you mean with this?

There are many other free mail services out there like from Yahoo, AOL or
Google. You can also opt to register your own domain name for instance with
GoDaddy.

Which mail protocol it needs to support, completely depends on your way of
working. A Hosted Exchange account will give you the most flexibility and
will give you many unique Outlook features. POP3, IMAP and the Outlook
Connector (MAPI) are other account protocol which Outlook supports.

What do you mean with this?

Another system I use is OL2003 with msn.com. I was told when I was using
Outook Express that it would no longer support msn.com, and if I wanted to
use OL with msn.com, I would need Outlook Connector. No problem, except
that when I display Sent Items, instead of showing the recipient names, it
always shows the sender's name (i.e., me) for each entry. When I questioned
this in this forum, I was essentially told that it's just the nature of the
configuration. Please let me know if this is not true, in which case I
would select msn.com if only for consistency's sake

My "way of working" is plain vanilla. Mail, contacts, and calendar --
nothing fancy. I don't need the "most flexibility" or my own domain name,
although I just looked at GoDaddy, and the cost is low enough to make it an
appealing consideration.

which Outlook supports.

I had to read this a few times before I realized that both IMAP and MAPI are
legitimate terms. That's not nice!! Now that I'm getting smarter, it seems
that OL needs Outlook Connector to work with MAPI accounts, which include
hotmail, msn, and others, but it is perfectly capable of dealing with POP3
and IMAP accounts. If I can't fix the Sent Items problem, I would have to
use one of the latter; in which case, my only concern is how do I go about
finding a public domain that uses them? (Right now, I getting the feeling
that there's something very basic about protocols that I don't understand.
Please be gentle with me.)

Microsoft offers a lovely option in hosted Exchange. Something you might
want to look into. That's a professional solution with your own domain
name and a fully featured web interface to your life.

I use Gmail with a custom SMTP server set to my domain name. No one I
send mail to knows I use Gmail for it. Most web hosts offer IMAP and
SMTP to their customers.

My recommendation is to get your own domain. It's professional and
inexpensive.

Aha, now I get it about your Sent Items
You appear to have your view set to the Messages view.
Switch it to the Sent To view and it will show the "To" columns as well
instead of the "From" column.

In Outlook 2007 you'll find this under;
View-> Current View-> Sent To

In Outlook 2007 this would be;
View-> Arrange By-> Current View-> Sent To

And yes, both MAPI and IMAP are valid references to mail protocols and both
mean something completely different. Don't worry about it; you're not the
first confusing them. Only remember that there are different type of ways to
connect to a mailbox and forget about the technical things and names behind
it. Once it comes up again, just ask ;-)
