**I Need Help with "Document Map..."

R

RW

I use Word on OS X and it works great. I have a 500 page document (a
novel), and the way it's set up is...

CHAPTER (formatted as First Header)

Sub-title (formatted as Second Header)

The actual writing... (formatted as Body Text)

Up until I did something, the Document Map would display the "Chapter", and
then the Subtitle underneath it. Now, and I have no idea why, it's also
listing every first line of every paragraph in the Document map and it's now
useless. All I want it to display is the Chapter and then the One Line
Description (Subtitle) underneath it, so that I can go back and forth
quickly between chapters. How do I do get rid of all the extra paragraphs
in the Document map and go back to just chapter and subtitle???

Thanks,
Rachel.

Hi Rachel,

Document Map is infamous for corrupting documents. For that reason, the
experts advise using Outline View instead. I don't know if there's a simple
fix for your problem, but I would advise using the standard method for
"uncorrupting" a document (see below) and then learning how to use Outline
View.

To uncorrupt a document, turn on the Show/Hide formatting tool, copy all of
your document except for the very last paragraph mark, and paste it into a
blank, new Word doc.

To learn to use Outline View, see here:
<http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Formatting/UsingOLView.htm>. This article
was written for the PC but the principles apply on the Mac. The ALT key on
the PC is the Option key on the Mac.

Hope this helps.
