You might consider following a project planning methdology such as the
following:

1. Schedule your project using a Start date (Project - Project
Information - Start date)

2. Do task planning, including creating the task list, reordering the
tasks, building the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), setting task Durations
wherever approrpiate, setting task dependencies, setting task Constraints
and Deadlines, set task Calendars wherever needed, and adding task Notes
wherever appropriate to document the project

3. Do resource planning by entering your project team in the Resource Sheet
view, or by building the project team using the Build Team from Enterprise
wizard (Project Server 2002 or 2003 only)

4. Do assignment planning by assigning your project team members to each
task in the project so that their task work is realistically modeled

5. Add a final project milestone (Duration = 0 days) called something like
"Project Complete" and link the milestone to the last task in the project

6. Examine the planned finish date of the project versus the contractual
finish date

7. If the project will finish later than the contractual finish date, you
can either replan the project with additional resources or renegotiate the
contractual finish date (just kidding!)

These are some ideas for you. Hope this helps.

thanks dale, i have taken in all you wrote in, i also have another question, when assigning durations to a user testing acceptance(UAT), for a project involving building a web server with overall project duration of say 4months, is 3days realistic to assign to this task. And also is 3 days realistic to assign to d following task of training users? cheers

The process of estimating both Duration values and Work values is a bit
tricky. In fact, I refer to these values as "guesstimates" since I do both
"guessing" and "esimating" to come up with a number.

The Project Management Institute (PMI) recommends a "best practice" that
wherever possible, estimates should come from the team members who will
actually perform the work. I think you can see why this would be a "best
practice" in the estimation process:

1. You will draw upon the work experience of people who have performed the
task previously, which could make their estimate more reliable
2. You get "buy-in" from the person
3. Resources are more likely to report accurate progress on tasks in which
they provided the estimate

Therefore, in your scenario, I really can't tell you whether your Duration
estimates are accurate. Instead, I would recommend that you speak with your
team members and ask them for their estimates. If you cannot do this, then
I would recommend you speak with people who have worked on tasks like those
in the past. Hope this helps.
