I/O error message can't open inbox although I am getting mail

I am unable to open my inbox (other folders open fine) I also get the notice of emails and when I click on those they open, but I can't get into my inbox which indicates it has new emails. I am a novice with MACs and don't understand all the lingo but can follow directions. Any suggestions?

I assume you're referring to the Inbox that is listed as the first item
under Folders on My Computer. What exactly happens when you click on your
inbox?

Two things are going. When I click on the icon to open the program it will tell me that it failed and when I click ok it opens. My Inbox folder has a symbol that looks like it downloading. I click on the Inbox and after a long pause the message comes up that says I/O error Cannot open that function. The folder is downloading mail but I can't get to it.
Does this help?

I have not heard of this problem before. I would try rebuilding the
database. Hold down the option key when launching Entourage and select the
option to rebuild the database.

I/O error almost always means disk damage. Open Disk Utility and run Repair.
If you have Disk Warrior, I suggest you run it.

Let this be an early warning that you need to backup your data. Your drive
could suddenly fail and you would loose everything.
