I overwrote a document, anyway to retrieve original?

My wife was working on a large document in MS Word 2002 and accidently
overwrote the file with a smaller version of the document. Is there any way
to recover the earlier version?

Not unless under Tools> Options > Save you have checked "Always create backup
copy".
