Okay, here's the deal...
Some how or another (I'm not quite sure upon the process how this was
accomplished), my registry became corrupt.... This isn't apparent while
Windows 98 is running, however when I restart my computer it is. When I
restart it, it'll go through it's normal routine, until it begins to start up
Windows. When this is done, the "Windows Registry Checker" is run and it
takes about 10 minutes to "restore" my System.dat (Where the registry is
held). It finally finishes with "Windows has sucessfully restored your
Registry" (or something like that) and Windows starts up like normal.
There are a few problems that occur while Windows is running, but it's
nothing to do with the OS itself. It's more to do with the programs that
must be reinstalled into the registry... But reguardless, I despise the fact
that I must go through that process EVERY time I boot my computer. It does
seriously take about 10 minutes.... In order to fix it, I did some research,
and found a few solutions including restoring a previous backup and restoring
the initial registry (System.1st and renaming it System.dat and placing it in
the Windows folder, while in the command prompt). I was hoping that would
fix it but it didn't.... And I didn't even bother with the System.da0 and
User.da0 because I CAN successfully boot Windows, thus it rewrote these
backup files and also making them corrupt.... I've also tried the process of
recalling a backup using the Registry Check, but that didn't help either.
I only see two other options...
1) Completely reformat my HD, which I REALLY don't want to do and will
obviously make sure that's my last option.
2) Delete all the Registry files (System.dat User.dat System.1st System.da0
and User.da0) and reinstall Windows 98 once again. I was going to attempt
this but then I realize, my command prompt won't recognize my D:\ drive
(Where the Windows 98 SE CD is placed)....
So now my question(s),
1) Is there any other way to restore a corrupt System.dat file, that I
havn't tried?
2) If I MUST reinstall Windows 98, thus removing the registry all
togeather, how can I get my D:\ drive recognized by the prompt... I'd hate to
delete the Registry files and not be able to even get into Windows....
Any answers would be GREAT!
