I really need help with this one

Lee

All of a sudden, I could no longer open my excel
spreadsheet. I get the message "The File may be read-
only, or you may be trying to access a read only
location. Or the server the document is stored on may
not be responding" I've checked the attributes and they
are all unchecked. All my other files work fine. I'm
using Windows XP Prof and Excel 2002. Please Please help.

Thanks in advance,

Lee

Usually you get a "Read Only Message" when the document is accessible b
multiple users, and someone else currently has it open.

Are you on a network where the file is accessible to other users?

Try opening the document, hit "ok" when it says "read only", and the
choose File>Save As and save it by a different name. That should allo
you to have write access at the very least

I'n not on a network. I wish I could "read only". It
doesn't even let me do that. Any other suggestions?

Hi Lee,
If not on a network the most common cause of Read Only
is that the file was copied from a CD-R. Which makes
sense to most programs -- fortunately not to XCOPY.
I've just started using another backup method and I haven't
checked that yet. More information on the problem/solution.

Basically you can go to the directory or any higher up directory
and mark then turn off the read-only bit via properties, or other
means listed.
