I removed a word from custom dictionary but Word still remembers it

I accidentally added a misspelled word to the Custom Dictionary. I've
tried editing the Custom Dictionary, deleting the Custom Dictionary,
and (per advice I read in this group) re-saving the Custom Dictionary
in "Speller Custom Dictionary" format. No matter what I try, Word
still sees this misspelling as a valid word (i.e. doesn't underline in
red when I have Spelling turned on).

The word is obviously stored somewhere other than the Custom
Dictionary in ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft. What else can I do /
where else should I look?

Thanks for any advice!

In Preferences/Spelling and Grammar, click Dictionaries. The Custom
Dictionaries dialog will open with all of the custom dictionaries that
Word knows about. Click on each of them to display their Full Path
(actually, that's a bit of a joke - there's not enough room in the
dialog to display it: instead, do a Spotlight search for the dictionary
name).

Thanks for the reply. I did that, but it displays only the one Custom
Dictionary that I (re)created, and when I open that it's completely
empty. Puzzling....

I am sure this is a silly question: But you HAVE re-started Word since you
deleted the custom dictionary?

If Word was running when you deleted the dictionary, it was holding the old
custom dictionary in memory, and will simply put it back when it closes.

It is also worth asking how you KNOW that the word is actually IN the custom
dictionary? Words can be marked as "ok" without being in the custom
dictionary.

What language is the text in? What language is set for the custom
dictionary? (Note: "English" is not close enough ‹ there are 29 flavours
of English, which exact language?)

Hope this helps

As John says, if the word(s) ever had "ignore" tagged to it it will never be
flagged in that doc no matter how many times it reappears, is retyped or
you simply "run" the spell checker - even though the word(s) haven't
actually been added to a custom dictionary.

Try going to Word> Preferences> Spelling & Grammar, first be sure there
isn't a check in the box to "Hide spelling errors in this document", then
click the Recheck Document button. That will force any "ignored" terms to be
flagged if there are any.

Bob, using "Check Document" in Spelling prefs did the trick -- thank
you so much! I wasn't familiar with that feature. Whew, I'm so
relieved to have this resolved. Many thanks to everyone who replied,
and thanks again, Bob, for the fix!
