You can't use Word to add text to a .pdf file. You need Acrobat to edit it.

Right. If manning created the pdf using Word, manning would need to re-open
the original Word file, edit it, then re-create the pdf.

Even if you have Adobe Acrobat, it's usually a lot easier and quicker to go
back to the original source document than it is to edit the pdf.
