I saved a word document, closed it, and re opened. most of its gon

I have been working on a Word document for a month now and I finally finished
it a few days ago. Today I opened it and made a small change that I regret
making. I saved it, closed word, and then went back to change another thing.
When I opened the file, 90% of it was gone! I don't understand how that
happened, but that's not really the question I want answered. I want to know
if there is any way that I can open the old file, the one I saved a few days
ago, because they are both under the same name and whenever I try to open it
up, I still see the new, useless one. Can someone explain to me how I can
find my old file? Please?

Unless you have a backup of it somewhere, it's gone.

It happened presumably because you had some text selected when you made the
'small change' which deleted the selected text.

If you used Save rather than SaveAs and you have Word configures to
automatically create backups, you will have a backup of the file in the same
folder as the original that contains the last previously saved version. If
you don't have the backup function switched on then do so now, for your
future benefit.

You cannot have two files of the same name in the same folder. The Windows
filing system does not allow that.

If you have saved over a file and have no backup, there is no way back to
the file you have replaced.

In Word 2003, try going to File, then Open, then select the 1st version, then
tools, recover previous version

I don't see a "Recover Previous Version" item on the Tools menu in the Open
dialog in Word 2003.
