I send 1 e mail outlook sends this as #4 of 3 messages then hangs

Outlook 2003 keeps trying to send messages even though there are none in my
outbox. For example I send a message and outlook shows it as 4th message of
4. It sends it OK but then shows it is trying to send message #3 which does
not exist, and eventually gives up.

Anyone idea how I can purge the application of the three non existent
messages?

I have tried removing outlook and reinstalling also using detect and repair.
I have current virus checker and scan the system regularly so I dont think it
is a virus.
