I sent my resume using words and receiver can not open file

I have been sending my resume to apply for employment, but employers have
replied saying that they can not open the file, they say they just see a
bunch of boxes. I have checked my settings and I don't see anything wrong,
I've mailed it to my self and I can open it but then again I have MS Office
2007 installed in my laptop. So If anyone can help me how to fix it that
would be great.

Word 2007 uses a different file format than earlier versions, with a .docx
extension instead of .doc. If the people trying to open your .docx file
don't have the free compatibility pack, they won't be able to open it.

There are two things you can do:

- You can save individual documents in the old format. Open your resume or
other document, click the Office button and choose Save As, and change the
"Save as type" dropdown in the dialog from "Word Document (*.docx)" to "Word
97-2003 Document (*.doc)". Send the old-format copy.

- If many or most of your documents will be sent to others, and you want to
save in the old format without having to change it each time, go to Office
button > Word Options > Save, and change the "Save files in this format"
dropdown to "Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)". Any time you do want to save in
the new .docx format, you'll have to change the "Save as type" dropdown
then.

And a third solution:
To be sure that your document can be opened by anybody and that the content
and layout remains unchanged, save the document as a PDF file and send that
file instead of the Word file. Anybody can view a PDF file using a free
viewer whereas Word documents can only be opened if you have Word installed.

You need a program to create a PDF file. You can find a free PDF writer via
Google. Examples:

Not always a good idea. Some places (contract houses, for example) will take
a resume and edit out some of the info (address, phone number) before they
send it on. I would advise asking the recipient what format they prefer.
