I went back to the Microsoft page I just mentioned and
decided to try their suggestion. Thankfully, it worked.
According to what I read, it means I have a damaged
Normal.dot template. What does that mean? Am I in for
more problems with Word??? Any input would be GREATLY
appreciated!

There's a lot of reasons why the Normal.Dot gets toasted and I've quit
trying to figure them out because, even if you knew, it wouldn't make
much difference as Word will create a new one.
Knowing/accepting this means that you want to keep anything of
importance out of Normal.Dot.
