I type one letter and Word freezes

After one letter, space bar, return, etc. Word freezes. I
can & close any other window and it works again... for one
more letter. If I slide the cursor up to the toolbar area,
it comes back as two little up/down arrows facing each
other. I have re-installed word, downloaded upgrades, run
virus check, cleaned mouse, erased temp files, run
scandisk... all the fixes I can think of. Excel works
fine. Internet works fine. Word is doing this with new and
saved docs. Any help?

FWIW, the mouse pointer is irrelevant, assuming you're using Word 2002 and
are in Print Layout view. If you hover long enough, you'll see the Hide
White Space ScreenTip. If you click at this point, the header/footer area of
the page will be suppressed, allowing you to have a continuous view of the
document as in Normal view, but with all the other WYSIWYG features of Print
Layout view.
