I want to insert the formats in my excel spreadsheet into my merge doc. For
example. Expanding a custom number from 1654 to 0001654 without losing the
leading zero's also number $486 to $486.00

If you are using Word 2002 or 2003, the default connection method is OLEDB,
which does not preserve the numeric formatting in Excel. You have two
options:

1. You can connect to Excel using DDE, which will preserve the formatting.
To do this, check the box for "Confirm conversion at Open" on the General
tab of Tools | Options. Then reconnect to your data source; you'll get a box
asking you to choose the connection method, and you can choose DDE.
