I want to paste in new POINTS, not a new SERIES, from another workbook

I've seen EXCELlent advice on combining data from multiple workbooks
into a single chart.

I'm trying to use this procedure:

1 - Open Chart (source data in Book x, which can be open or not)
2 - Open Book 2 (source from which I want to add data)
3 - In Book 2, select data to add to chart and use Copy
4 - Go to Chart, click Paste Special, and the dialog box offers me the
choice to paste cells as "New Series" or "New Points."

But "New Points," which is what I want, is greyed out.

Why, and how do I overcome this?

All the data for one set of x-values or one set of y-values have to be
from a single source.

You could copy the data in book2, switch to book x, paste special (use
links) into the same sheet as the data currently in the chart, and then
add these linked data to the chart.
