icon and dot between words in outlook text. How to fix

I have a small icon that looks like an ip that follows each word in text and
leaves a dot between each word.
I need to remove these.
Does anybody know how to fix this?

Version of Outlook? Does Ctrl+Shift+8 toggle them off and on? If not, open
a new message form and look on the tools, options menu and disable show
formatting marks - if you need help finding the right dialog, we need to
know the version of outlook and if you use word as the editor.
