Icon Problem

Hi Since un installing Office 2003 trial and re installing Office XP the
icon association for .HTML and .HTM files and .GIF files has gone. I have
tried all the usuall fixes via tweekui, removing the association in folder
options/file type. even associating the file type with another program such
as Word, Excel, PP. trying open with etc and no matter what I have done the
icon never changes. Yet if I make a shortcut I can change the icon. I have
posted a gif file in microsoft.test as a lot of people have difficulty in
understanding what an icon is and what the problem is. It is not a problem
with internet explorer, it is a problem with associating file types such as
..HTML, .HTM and .GIF with the proper icon. For example

%SystemRoot%\system32\url.dll,0

is the icon for Copy of mailme.html

and %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll,0 is the icon for the other three
file types

If I change the value of %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll, from 0 to
151 in the registry it makes no difference to the icon. I guess that a
registry key is missing rather than being corrupt
I have done the following some of which are not a correct solution to the
problem but were suggested

:-Start/Run/Regedit- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Toolbar. In the Toolbar key, if you see the BrandBitmap and
SmBrandBitmap values on the right, delete them.

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll

regsvr.exe shell32.dll

Tools-Folder Options-File types and use IE as the program to open it with.

To restore the Internet Explorer icon, right-click
{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}, modify the Value Data from 1 to 0,
and click OK.

none of which worked

It has also been suggested that I do a system restore
I need more suggestions

Try deleting ShellIconCache - a hidden file in the \windows directory. This
is where all icons are and when you delete the file you force Windows to
rebuild the icons.

It is usually better to delete from a real-mode DOS prompt because deleting
from within Windows sometimes takes multiple deletes and reboots to actually
force a deletion and rebuild.
